ART NOTES: In the Galleries

“Amoebic Stream,” by Jacques Menache

New multimedia acrylic works by local artist Jacques Menache are featured at Panzanella through Nov. 7 in an exhibit titled “Magnifications.” The exhibit consists of about 20 pieces in mixed-media acrylic, dealing mostly with amoebae, protozoa, paramecium, bacteria and other simple cell forms that inhabit our bodies and environment. A reception will be held Oct. 10 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The 23rd annual “Sculpture in the Garden” exhibit at the N.C. Botanical Garden opens Oct. 1 and runs through Nov. 19, featuring the works of 30 sculptors using a variety of media, including stone, stainless steel, concrete, clay, wood and recycled aluminum. More than 50 one-of-a-kind sculptures by new and returning artists from around the state will be placed amid the native wildflowers.

At the Ackland Art Museum on the UNC campus, “Carolina Collects: 150 Years of Modern and Contemporary Art” is on display through Dec. 4. The exhibit features nearly 90 hidden treasures by some of the most renowned artists of the modern era, gathered from private collections of UNC alumni, including works ranging from an oil painting by Claude Monet and a suspended sculpture by Olafur Eliasson to an Alexander Calder standing mobile and a Pablo Picasso gouache.

At FRANK this month, member artist Sudi Rakusin will display the paintings in her “Chorus of Saints” series that inspired her latest project, “Journey Cards,” a divination deck built around the 19 imagined female saints and 36 goddesses drawn from cultures around the world. Rakusin will give a talk at FRANK on Oct. 13 at 6:30 p.m.

Woodwork by Tom Shields

Over at LIGHT Art + Design, “RE:,” an exhibit that delves into the meaning of the prefix “re,” is on display this month through Nov. 12. Much of the exhibit has an environmentally conscious slant, embodying recycling, reuse, restoring and renewable materials, featuring works by staple LIGHT artists Lynda Curry, Beverly Dawson, Al Frega, Peg Gignoux, Lynda Sanders, Leigh Suggs and others, as well as woodworker Tom Shields, a new artist to LIGHT. An opening reception will be held Oct. 8 from 5 to 8 p.m.
“Building Blues,” acrylic and graphite on canvas, by Lisa Creed

At Hillsborough’s Eno Gallery, Lisa Creed will display “Crossing Paths,” a solo exhibition of new paintings, this month. The exhibit features canvases that swing with shape, color and texture. An opening reception will be held Sept. 30 from 6 to 9 p.m. and the exhibit will run through Oct. 23.

In Saxapahaw, the works of Suzanne Connors and Nancy Raasch, including art-to-wear and jewelry, are on display this month through Oct. 30. A reception will be held Oct. 7 from 6 to 9 p.m.
