Gimme Five! Mark Holland of Jennyanykind

After 10+ years as a band, Jennyanykind called quits on their ramshackle Americana in 2003. The core of the group, brothers Michael and Mark Holland, turned to new interests.  For Mark that meant trading his drums for guitar and writing a batch of blue and roots-influenced tunes–for a time as Mark Holland Rhythm Force or thSongster, soon as a duo called Applesauce.

Just last year, Holland and his brother decided to hit the restart button on Jennyanykind. With everything moving apace, Holland’s having to pull creative double-time. But can this fearsome songwriter handle the five hardest questions in faux business? Find out for yourself after the jump.

1. If your band were a sport, which would it be?
As a solo, I would compare myself to a golfer. Out taking Ambien and getting busy. Jennyanykind is like a shuffleboard game of arguing, old men until someone breaks out the bubbly and it’s young, old times again.

2. When was the moment you first thought music was something you might like to try?
I thought when I heard the Stones at age 7 I wanted to play piano like Ian Stewart. However, that quickly went away when i actually started taking piano lessons. It was really Charlie Watts. I heard him and made my old man buy an old Ludwig kit with the name “The Singing Disciples” on the kick. I still wish I played it.

3. Describe your typical high school dance experience.
Go to the dance for 30 minutes and then take your date to a hotel. I never danced that much.

4. Who/what might be a few inspirations or influences that would really surprise people?
Prince…man, I love that guy. (sigh)

5. What did you dream of being when you were a kid? (how ’d that turn out?)
A Rock and roller. Came true!

Be sure to catch the Mark Holland duo’s set at the Carrboro Music Festival, Sunday, Sept. 25. The show starts at 6:00 sharp in the Balanced Movement Studio in Carr Mill Mall. And by all means, give Mark a high five when you see him!
