Gimme Five! Miles Andrews of Big Fat Gap

In Graham County near the Tennessee border is one of the few remaining stands of old growth virgin forest.  That’s the Big Fat Gap that this revolving troupe of bluegrass musicians took it’s name. Like the forest, Miles Andrews and his compatriots grow from old roots–old time songs and sounds on acoustic instruments.  What started as a pickin’ circle of friends has grown into an important sustaining force for the local acoustic scene in the area.

They’ve spent years building and sustaining a reputation for their musicianship, but can one of their own handle the Gimme Five treatment? Find out for yourself after the jump.

1. If your band were a holiday, which would it be?
If the BFG was a holiday we would be Christmas. The time to celebrate and enjoy the fellowship of the family and friends. We have hosted the Carrboro Christmas Reviaval for the last ten years. We get past members and guest that are in town to join in the festivies but that is how the band is all year long!

2. When/how did you start the Tuesday Night jam at Armadillo Grill? How has it grown over the years?
Gary from the Dillo and I where having a chat and he threw the idea out about four(?) years ago. It was a blast from go. Over the years it has been a meeting place for acoustic musicians to jam together. There have been some epic jams and great new friendships, relationships, bands, etc made at the Dillo. Still jamming 6:30-9pm every Tuesday!

3. Describe the feeling of playing in such a large and talented (and rotating) ensemble.
The BFG cast of characters is a blessing. We have had a lot of adventures over the past ten years. Everyone enjoys keeping up and catching up when ever we have a chance. There are talks of a reunion a Shakori this fall. Fingers crossed!

4. Who/what might be a few inspirations or influences that would really surprise people?
Our inspirations have come from our fans and friends!

5. What did you dream of being when you were a kid? (How ’d that turn out?)
I always dreamed of playing in the band!
