ART NOTES: In the Galleries

“Desert Lantern” by Kelsey Melville, on display at Open Eye Café this month

In The ArtsCenter’s Center Gallery, the annual faculty show will be on display June 4-30, offering the public an opportunity to see work from ArtsCenter teaching artists and staff. A reception will be held during the 2ndFriday Artwalk on June 8 from 6 to 9 p.m.

Also during June’s 2ndFriday Artwalk, and also from 6 to 9 p.m., multi-media artist Kelsey Melville will debut an exhibit at Open Eye Café. With this series of works, Melville used a variety of materials, including recycled materials, fabric, yarn and found objects, drawing on nostalgic thoughts, images from her past, lost loved ones and faded memories.

The new Carrboro Craft Market continues this month from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on June 9 in the parking area in front of Southern Rail. The market features handmade goods, select antiques, vintage clothing and crafts.

Saxapahaw Artists Gallery will open the first exhibit in its new space, in the historic Sellars Building at 1616 Jordan Drive, on June 8 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. The featured artist will be Raleigh’s Kristan Skinner – known in the art community as Kristan Five – who has a wide body of abstract, color-based work, heavily influenced by time spent with an international design firm and travels throughout northern Europe.

The Carrboro Branch Library will open an exhibit, “Places With Soul,” on June 23, featuring the works of Judy Bauman, Nerys Levy, David Otto, Rietta Cooper, Melissa Miller, Marilyn Pernod, Carroll Lassiter, Elaine O’Neil and David Taylor. The show, which runs through Oct. 22, features images that capture places with a spiritual dimension in Orange County and surrounding areas.

“Tributary” by Daniel Essig, on display at Eno Gallery this month

At Hillsborough’s Eno Gallery, two exhibitions are on display through June 24. “Surface Tension,” in the upper gallery, features the book-based sculptures of Daniel Essig and the fine hand-woven fiber installations of Vicki Essig, while “Right & Left,” in the lower gallery, features Jennifer Miller’s new paintings, including watercolors from recent months of healing and change.

An exhibit at Orange County’s Historical Museum showcases Hillsborough’s historical architecture with a focus on preservation and restoration. Highlighting major architects, builders and designers responsible for Hillsborough’s classic look, the show is on display through Aug. 15.
