Ten bicycles, helmets, locks and bike lights were donated to the Inter-Faith Council men’s homeless shelter in downtown Chapel Hill on Friday, Feb. 6 as the result of a community-wide effort to provide safe and reliable transportation for homeless men living at the shelter. The Employment Initiatives Work Group, a committee of the Orange County Partnership to End Homelessness, initiated the effort. The ReCYCLEry donated ten bikes and Performance Bicycle donated all of the biking accessories and two bicycle racks. This grassroots community effort has been a great show of what our community can accomplish to fill a need.
UNC summer reading announced
UNC’s own journalism professor, Paul Cuadros, will be read this summer by thousands of incoming freshmen. The 2009 Summer Reading Program Book Selection Committee has chosen his book “A Home on the Field†as the summer reading. The book explores class and ethnic conflict through the story of a Latino high school soccer team in Siler City. It offers insight into the complex issue of Latino immigrants coming to North Carolina to seek better lives and steady work and the resistance they encounter. The committee chose Cuadros’s book from 239 other book recommendations.

Recipe Provided by Market Customer: Will West
Ingredients:
2 medium sized beets*
3 cloves of garlic (chopped or pressed)
Olive oil
Red Wine Vinegar
½ pound bag of arugula*
Goat cheese*
Kosher salt
Pepper
Procedure:
Wash and peel beets and be sure to remove greens (if the greens look young and tender, you can sauté them with the beets). Using a cheese shredder or a cuisinart, shred the raw beets into small strips. In a skillet over medium heat, sauté 2 cloves of garlic and olive oil. Add the shredded beets and 2 tablespoons of red wine vinegar. Cook until tender and set aside. Wash the arugula and place in a salad bowl.
Make a quick dressing: combine ¼ cup of Olive Oil with 2 Tablespoons of red wine vinegar, 1 pressed garlic clove, Dijon type mustard, and a pinch of sugar.
Toss the sautéed beets, goat cheese, and dressing with the arugula. Serve.

Lantern Festival 2009
from Lantern Restaurant:
Dear Friends,
Please join us in celebrating the Year of the Ox at our annual Lantern Festival this Monday, February 9 through Thursday, February 12. On these four nights, in addition to our regular menu, we will offer a special 4-course menu featuring a grass-fed Jersey steer from Chapel Hill Creamery.
Reservations are required for the special menu, however some dishes will be available à la carte as well.
What is the Lantern Festival?
In China, the Lantern Festival begins on the eve of the first full moon of the New Year and is celebrated with competitive pageantry: elaborate lantern displays, yangge dancing, Buddha worship, and ceremonial riddle solving. In Chapel Hill, we mark the occasion every year with tacky paper lanterns and a menu of dishes never before seen at Lantern featuring prime local ingredients.

* Yes, we know Ramseur isn’t in Orange County, but many locavores consider “local” within 150 miles of the “centroid”, which in our case is Citizen Tower. So Ramseur, at a mere 45 miles, is in.
