Gimme Five! Will Hackney of Trekky Records

Will Hackney was barely in high school when he and Martin Anderson, a middle schooler, decided to start a record label. At first it was just a name they wrote on homemade cds for their admittedly terrible punk bands.  Over the years, Trekky has grown into something much more. The label touts a lineup of wickedly talents local acts that are as much connected by their friendships as by their musical sense. This Friday, they will release their first compilation, Amalgam, at The Nightlight with Butterflies, Phil Cook and His Feat, Vibrant Green and a surprise guest there to celebrate.

Before things get too exciting though, it’s best we find out if one of their founders can handle a few of the hardest questions in faux business. Find out for yourself after the jump.

Gimme Five! Montgomery Morris of Flesh Wounds

When her punk band Thee Scab Eaters disbanded because its other founding members had children, Laura King decided to recruit a new crew to make loud, rock music that cuts to the quick. Flesh Wounds does just that. King, Montgomery Morris and Dan Kinney have only just begun pounding out brutal sets of tunes. With a release tentatively set for sometime in April and a handful of tour slots lined up, these punks are aiming to annihilate your eardrums in the best possible way.

See how their howling guitarist takes up our five question assault after the jump!

Gimme Five! Boykiller

Somebody alert the authorities! Ginger Wagg, Catherine Steele, and Theresa Stone have joined forces to attack stages and eardrums as Boykiller. They’re a brand new band on a mission to murder songs as well as they already slay the opposite sex.

But can these ladies handle five furious questions? See for yourself after the jump.

Gimme Five! Elliott Mills of Magnolia Klezmer

For fourteen years now musicians have come together to share their mastery of Klezmer, Jazz, polka, brass band, and classical music under the banner of Magnolia Klezmer. The group, typically twelve to fifteen members strong, is as apt to play in full force as in quartet. They’ve headlined weddings, benefits, bat mitzvahs and even spent a few afternoons under the trees on Weaver Street’s lawn.

Holding it down on drums, bass, and contra bass balalaika, (Dr. and bona-fide Duke professor) Elliott Mills surely knows his way around a dance beat (and a research lab)…but can he handle our five question assault? See for yourself after the jump!

Gimme Five! Hank Smith of The Morning After

When the musicians of The Morning After first teamed up, their range of expertise made choosing just one style to focus on a difficult task.  Ultimately, they figured it’s way more fun to share the love and throw out the rulebook. The resulting sound is a wild blend of rock, bluegrass, soul, jazz, funk, latin and beyond. They’re part acoustic revivalists, part showstoppers.

Can their banjo-man handle his part in answering these five questions, though? See for yourself after the jump.

Gimme Five! John of John Howie Jr. & The Rosewood Bluff

After his Two Dollar Pistols ran out of bullets, John Howie Jr. wasted no time putting together a new act, The Rosewood Bluff. The band’s been kicking up dust, playing their soulful honkytonk for eager crowds since circa 2008. Sure they’ve figured out the best pull on the pedal steal to make the barkeeps smile, but can their fearless leader handle a round of Gimme Five? See for yourself after the jump.

Gimme Five! Rapsody

This Snow Hill, NC native has made a name for herself as the first lady of Kooley High and as a solo artist, working at the right hand of mentor and hip hop mastermind 9th Wonder.  Rapsody has a flow that won’t quit and a way with rhymes, but can this masterful emcee handle a round of five furious questions?

Gimme Five! Alex Iglehart of Calico Haunts

Take a peak at their album covers and even the worst psychic might predict Chapel Hill’s Calico Haunts music might have a certain gauzy, sepia-tone feel. Indeed, the band’s sound is a country rock swell of pastoral imagery, earnest vocals, and a psychedelic-folkpop sensibility that harkens to the best of Mazzy Star.

So sure, Alex Iglehart, Wylie Pamplin, and Scott Carle know how to craft a beautiful haze, but can their lead songwriter handle a round of five furious questions? Find out for yourself after the jump.

Gimme Five! Phil of Phil Cook and His Feat

Phil Cook made a name for himself as one third of Megafaun, a band famed for their mad scientist approach to folk and indie rock sounds. Their success hasn’t kept Cook from enjoying the simple pleasure of playing music on his front porch, though. Eager to share that simpler side of his musical persona, Cook started a one-man-band. Lucky for all of us, you don’t need a private invite to hear him and “His Feat” play a round of tunes, just a copy of Hungry Mother Blues (his 2011 release) or perhaps an open stage for him to sing from.

So sure, Cook can handle a solo set, but can he tackle these five brain benders? See for yourself after the jump.

Gimme Five! Mimi McLaughlin of Magnolia Collective

What happens when members of Gambling the Muse, The Pnuerotics, Whiskey Smugglers and Red Collar come together? Sadly, “dance-off” is the wrong answer. Fortunately, Magnolia Collective isn’t. Coalescing their talent and love of Americana music, Daniel Snyder, Rich McLaughlin, Jason Butler, Zach Terry, Mimi McLaughlin, Jonathan Truesdale, and Andrew Mayo have formed an all-star folk rock revue of “bootgazers.”

They’ll celebrate the release of their debut EP Ghost Stories this Saturday, Dec 3rd at the Local 506. So sure, they’re off to a good start, but can one of their own survive our five-question beatdown first? See for yourself after the jump.

Gimme Five! Alex Maiolo of Fan Modine

Orchestral, alt-pop wiz Gordon Zacharias of Fan Modine is at the great advantage of having a wealth of ideas and a deep bench of local talent at the ready to spin them into beautiful reality. The slow build of the band from solo project to collaborative crew has always depended on a collusion of whip-smart arrangements and passionate players.  Now having released a new hook-happy, texturally rich production, Gratitude for the Shipper, the band set to let that dynamic shine yet again.

So, sure, they’ve got a way with making music, but can guitarist Alex Maiolo handle our five questions? See for yourself after the jump.
