MUD Clients

Windows

Unfortunately, the telnet application that comes with Windows is not friendly to mudding. So, many members of the Tempora Heroica community like to use a MUD client or an enhanced telnet program to assist in playing the game. Based on our community’s input, here are the suggested applications. For a telnet replacement, the best free application is PuTTY by a landslide. There are step-by-step instructions available to help configure PuTTY to connect to Tempora Heroica. The most-popular client on Tempora Heroica is zMUD.

Macintosh OS X and Linux

Fortunately, the situation with telnet is significantly better on both Linux and Macintosh OS X. We recommend that the telnet application that comes with the operating system is used. Follow the MUD’s address link, login1.ibiblio.org 2895, to connect now using telnet.

However, for those Macintosh OS X users interested in a MUD client, we suggest Savitar. (A configuration file to connect to Tempora Heroica using Savitar is available here.) A suitable client for Linux is still needed by the mudding community.

Macintosh Classic

Macintosh users who are still using Mac OS 8 or Mac OS 9 will need to download a telnet application. MacSSH is the best telnet (and secure shell) application available. For clients, we suggest Rapscallion.

Other options...

If none of these clients are satisfactory, the MUD Connector has a large overview of MUD clients available. The Mud Connector’s overview focuses primarily on the Windows platform. For Macintosh MUDders, consult the Mac OS MUD Zone or the Mac Orchard’s overview.

Fonts

Another important consideration is what font you use to play Tempora Heroica. We strongly recommend choosing a fixed-width (monospaced) font such as “Courier New”, “Lucida Console”, or “Monaco”. Choosing such a font will allow for such things as shop listings, charts, and maps to be displayed correctly while playing the MUD. The default display is 80 characters wide by 24 characters high. If you wish to change the size of the display this can be done by using the pageset command.
