  • Using Flight Gear to Test Debris Trackers

An article posted last week on i-programmer suggests that the flight simulator Flight Gear, hosted here at ibiblio, could be used to test drone flights aimed at spotting ocean debris. If deemed successful, the drones could be used to search for floating detritus and direct clean-up ships to the appropriate areas.

Flotsam and jetsam  is no joke, as evidenced by news of the first appearances of 1.5 million tons Japanese Tsunami debris that could wash ashore along the Canadian and American coastlines in the coming year. You can see the  projected spread of the debris from an article from Our Amazing Planet.com [Linked content no longer available]. Unfortunately, it’s arriving sooner than expected.

  • Celebrating Women

March 8th was International Women’s Day, a celebration of our sisters, our mothers, our daughters, our wives, our partners, our cousins, our friends, our co-workers, our heroes, our bosses, and all of the women who make our world what it is. Even though March 8th has passed, in the United States, March is Women’s History Month. We are called to reflect upon the journey that women have taken and the road that lies ahead.

Unfortunately, in spite of women’s incredible steps forward, there is still much work to be done. That is why ibiblio is extremely proud to host EMpowerME, a resource for women in potentially abusive relationships. We hope that EMpowerMe continues to be a source for empowerment, strength and refuge, and we solute the women of the world, the women in our lives, and the women that make the world a better place.

  • Afro-Louisiana History and Geneology

In 1984, Dr. Gwendolyn Hall began developing a database of genealogical and historic information about 100,000 slaves brought into the Louisiana area during the 18th and 19th centuries. Dr. Hall spent years poring over these documents to compile what is perhaps the largest searchable archive of this type of information from the region. Many of the original documents can be viewed on the website. They describe in chilling detail the shipping and inventory information that was meticulously recorded by French and Spanish human-traffickers and their American buyers–records of their “property” for tax and business purposes.
