Not a record — the highs were in the 90s this week in 2007

Lunchtime in Carrboro

Carrburritos

At the split where Main Street becomes Rosemary, tucked just behind the new coffee shop Jessee’s, is Carrburritos. Despite its small size, I was able to park in the parking lot. Inside you walk up to a counter, much like a cafeteria. The atmosphere is cheery, with bright yellow stucco walls adorned with large colorful acrylics. (In the hallway immediately preceding the restaurant door are featured local paintings.) All the indoor tables are covered in festive oilcloth, lending a South American feel to the joint. Ordering takes only a couple minutes; Mike Ellis of the Reservoir made me a delicious burrito with carne deshebrada, black beans, lettuce, cheese and salsa. All orders come with chips (made there) and your choice of six salsas, all made in house. I asked for the Frutas, which is a citrusy blend of tomatoes, pineapple and red onion.

If you have, as I do, a screaming baby, you may opt to sit on the patio outside. There, amidst the foliage and the quiet burble of a fountain, she can scream to her heart’s content. There are eight tables outside and plenty of shade. It’s also enclosed and looks out onto the Main Street side, through a wrought iron door with a metal cut out of Carrburritos. Lunch with a sweet tea (not toothachingly sweet) doesn’t come cheap at 8.14 plus a dollar tip, but the portions are large and can easily be split in two. Treat a coworker!

Sirens anyone?

In case you’re wondering what the sirens are about, this from UNC:

Dear Friends and Neighbors:

Next week, on Tuesday, September 22, the University will TEST its emergency sirens between noon and 1 p.m. as part of Alert Carolina, our campus safety awareness campaign. We test the sirens each semester to remind everyone what to do if they hear them go off for a real emergency and to make sure the equipment works properly. We just wanted to let you know about the test in case you hear the sirens. You don’t need to take any action.
The sirens will only sound during a life-threatening emergency such as an armed and dangerous person on or near campus, a major chemical spill or hazard, or a tornado sighting. The sirens also broadcast brief public address announcements.

In a real emergency, the sirens will sound a second time with a different tone when authorities determine the situation is “All clear. Resume regular activities.” UNC police will use the “all clear” signal during Tuesday’s test.

People outside on or near campus, including downtown Chapel Hill, may hear the sirens. The sirens are at five locations: Hinton James Residence Hall off Manning Drive; the Gary R. Tomkins Chilled Water Operations Center behind the Dogwood Parking Deck; Winston Residence Hall at the corner of Raleigh Street and South Road; near Hill Hall behind University Methodist Church; and at the Giles Horney complex off Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard.

The Alert Carolina web site, www.alertcarolina.unc.edu, is the best source of information during a campus emergency. You can learn more about the sirens and hear samples of the alert and “all clear” tones at the Alert Carolina site.

If you are the contact person for your neighborhood or community group, please forward this message to your members and others who may be interested.
