Pithy expressions about the heat

Someone just wandered back in from lunch and noted “It’s set to ‘Hell’ out there,” reminding me that The Carrboro Citizen newspaper is collecting pithy and colorful expressions about the heat and how hot it is.

Send ’em in, but keep ’em clean, though. Family newspaper and all that.

Code Orange

Pretty dang Orange.

Air quality alert all day.

Heat advisory from noon to 8 p.m.

We may see more official Orange Days ahead:

via WSJ:

Earlier this summer, officials with U. S. Environmental Protection Agency announced that they are considering a plan to lower the amount of ozone allowed in the air from the current health standard of .08 parts per million or ppm.

Parts per million is a way of measuring the concentration of ozone in the air.

Although the agency could leave the standard alone, state and local officials say it’s likely the benchmark will drop to at least .075 ppm. The standard could even be as low as .07 ppm.

Sheehan on impeachment, Pelosi

sheehan20707.jpg

Bit of a media madhouse this afternnon as Cindy Sheehan made her way into town for lunch with Mayor Mark Chilton and members of GRIM — Grass Roots Impeachment Movement. They’re touting Carrboro as “The Cradle of Impeachment” since the organization has been one of the earliest and most active impeachments groups in the South.

In a quick interview, Sheehan said she’s definitely running against U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi unless Pelosi starts an impeachment effort by Monday — the day Sheehan’s cross country tour reaches D.C.

Mayor Chilton says he was invited by GRIM, but didn’t say he was in support of impeachment. He did say he’ll be willing to share his specific views on the matter soon.

Photos from Carr Mill and Panzenella.

Audio: Cindy Sheehan on running against Pelosi

Says she will announce Monday unless the Speaker puts “impeachment on the table.”

Cindy Sheehan has lunch in Carrboro

Word got around the wires last night about a noontime lunch at Weaver Street Market with Cindy Sheehan. She’s on an impeachment tour and wanted to have a chat with Mayor Mark Chilton.

Updating as it happens and probably having a nice salad at the same time. Do not know if we’ll see a counter-protest, which happened in Charlotte. (Not sure what the duck was all about.)

N&O story here.

Here’s a Raw Story bit with a clip from Hardball.

USA today says she’s gone a little overboard.

Here’s Al McSurley’s essay in a recent Citizen. From his letter about the Cradle of Impeachment:

GRIM believes the best way to place impeachment on the front of Congress’s table is for the citizens of Carrboro, North Carolina, and the nation, to demand Rep. Conyers update the Articles of Impeachment he already has written and get on with the hearings. To remind us of our citizen’s duty, we suggest a simple local step. Several years ago Mayor Eleanor Kinnaird dubbed Carrboro “The Paris of the Piedmont.” I believe she would not mind if Carrboro, at least temporarily, were remembered with another name: “The Cradle of Impeachment.” GRIM suggests the Board of Alderman and your wonderful new paper adopt this as Carrboro’s official nickname — at least until November 2008.
