Notation Note: The
tunes below are recorded in what is called “abc notation.” They can easily be converted to standard
musical notation via highlighting with your cursor starting at “X:1” through
to the end of the abc’s, then “cutting-and-pasting” the highlighted notation
into one of the many abc conversion programs available, or at
concertina.net’s incredibly handy “ABC Convert-A-Matic” at http://www.concertina.net/tunes_convert.html **Please note that
the abc’s in the Fiddler’s Companion work fine in most abc conversion
programs. For example, I use abc2win and abcNavigator 2 with no problems
whatsoever with direct cut-and-pasting. However, due to an anomaly of the
html, pasting the abc’s into the concertina.net converter results in
double-spacing. For concertina.net’s conversion program to work you must
remove the spaces between all the lines of abc notation, so that they are
single-spaced, with no intervening blank lines. This being done, the F/C
abc’s will convert to standard notation nicely. Or, get a copy of
abcNavigator 2 – its well worth it! [AK] |

MURILLO'S LESSON. AKA - “Morella’s Lesson,” “Morelli’s Lesson.” Old‑Time, Hymn Tune
and Air.
***
The song called “Murillo’s Lesson”
can be found in the 1844 Sacred Harp
and the 1848 Sacred Melodeon,
‘fa-so-la’ hymnals. Lyrics were derived in part from a poem entitled “
***
As down a lone
valley with cedars
o'erspread,
From war's dread
confusion I pensively strayed,
The gloom from the face of fair
heaven retired,
The winds hushed
their murmurs, the thunders expired.
Perfumes as of Eden flowed
sweetly along,
A voice as of angels
enchantingly sung,
Columbia, Columbia
to glory arise,
The queen of the world
and the child of the skies.
***
Fair science
her gate
to thy sons shall unbar,
And the east see
thy morn hide
the beams of her
star.
New bards
and new sages
unrivalled shall soar
To fame unextinguished when time is no more.
To Thee the last
refuge of virtue
designed,
Shall fly from all nations the best
of mankind;
There grateful to heaven with transport shall bring

MURPHY DELANEY. AKA and see “The Miser [1],” “Parson in/on his Boots.” Scottish (originally Irish), English; Jig and Air. B Flat Major (Gow, Kerr): G Major (Ashman, O’Farrell). Standard. AABB. “Murphy Delaney” was attributed to Charles Dibdin in a songbook of 1828, according to Bruce Olsen, although he has not been able to confirm the fact. The tune appears in vol. 1 of O’Farrell’s Pocket Companion for the Irish Pipes” (c. 1805) and in Gow’s 3rd Repository (1806), both of which list it as Irish. The song is mentioned in a Victorian ghost story called “An account of some strange disturbances in Aungier Street” by J. Sheridan Le Fanu, originally printed in the Dublin University Magazine (1853).
***
I yet could hear a
pleasant fellow singing, on his way home, the then popular comic ditty called,
'Murphy Delany.' Taking advantage of this diversion I lay down again, with my
face towards the fireplace, and closing my eyes, did my best to think of nothing
else but the song, which was every moment growing fainter in the distance:--
***
''Twas Murphy
Delany, so funny and frisky,
Stept into a shebeen shop to get his skin full;
He reeled out again pretty well lined with whiskey,
As fresh as a shamrock, as blind as a bull.'

MURPHY’S (REEL) [3]. AKA and see “Raheen Reel [3].” Irish, Reel. D Major.
Standard tuning. AABB. Named for County Wexford harmonica player Phil Murphy.
However, the tune may be one of Kerry fiddler Dennis “The Weaver” Murphy’s
tunes. According to Kevin Burke (who
played the tune as the last of his “Raheen Medley” set, learned from Murphy and
his sons), Phil’s son said his father had learned it from Kerry musicians from
Dingle, and called it “The Dingle Reel” for convenience. Source for notated
