Notation
Note: The tunes below are recorded in what
is called “abc notation.” They
can easily be converted to standard musical notation via highlighting with
your cursor starting at “X:1” through to the end of the abc’s, then
“cutting-and-pasting” the highlighted notation into one of the many abc
conversion programs available, or at concertina.net’s incredibly handy “ABC
Convert-A-Matic” at http://www.concertina.net/tunes_convert.html **Please note that the abc’s in the Fiddler’s
Companion work fine in most abc conversion programs. For example, I use
abc2win and abcNavigator 2 with no problems whatsoever with direct
cut-and-pasting. However, due to an anomaly of the html, pasting the abc’s
into the concertina.net converter results in double-spacing. For
concertina.net’s conversion program to work you must remove the spaces
between all the lines of abc notation after pasting, so that they are
single-spaced, with no intervening blank lines. This being done, the F/C abc’s will convert to standard notation nicely. Or, get a
copy of abcNavigator 2 – its well worth it.

[2] (An Léimrás). AKA and see "Carrigaline," "It's a Hard Road to Travel,"
“The Milestone [2],” "Rocks of Cashel [1]." Irish, Reel.
C Major. Standard. One part (O'Neill): AABB (Breathnach, Flaherty): AA’BB’
(Taylor/Tweed). The melody was famously recorded in New York for Crown Records
by south County Sligo born fiddlers Paddy Killoran (1904-1965) and Paddy
Sweeney (1894-1974), who backed it with “Ah, Surely” in the early 1930’s. Breathnach
(CRÉ III) gives “The Boys of 25” as
an alternate title, however, this appears to be a mistake, as “Boys of Twenty
Five” is another title for the melody “Ah, Surely”, the other tune in the
Killoran/Sweeney medley. A version of the tune was recorded in Québec by
French-Canadian fiddler Guy Bouchard. Sources for notated versions: fiddler

STEER THE GILL. AKA and see "Lassintullich." Scottish, Reel. D
Mixolydian. Standard tuning. AABB. John Glen (1891)
finds the earliest printing of the tune in Robert Bremner's 1757 collection.
‘Steer’ is Scots for ‘stir,’ while a gill is a unit of liquid measure,
"one fourth of a mutchkin, about three quarters of the imperial gill.”
Until fairly recently the gill was in use as a unit solely for measuring
whiskey, although it has now been supplanted by metric measurements. Bremner (A
