arjunaḥ uvācha
Arjun said
mat-anugrahāya paramam guhyam adhyātma-sanjñitam
out of compassion to me supreme confidential about spiritual knowledge
yat tvayā uktam vachaḥ tena mohaḥ ayam vigataḥ mama
which by you spoken words by that illusion this is dispelled my

Verse 2
bhava apyayau hi bhūtānām śhrutau vistaraśhaḥ mayā
appearance disappearance indeed of all living beings have heard in detail by me
tvattaḥ kamala-patra-akṣha māhātmyam api cha avyayam
from you lotus-eyed one greatness also and eternal

Verse 3
evam etat yathā āttha tvam ātmānam parama-īśhvara
thus this as have spoken you yourself Supreme Lord
draṣhṭum ichchhāmi te rūpam aiśhwaram puruṣha-uttama

manyase yadi tat śhakyam mayā draṣhṭum iti prabho

paśhya me pārtha rūpāṇi śhataśhaḥ atha sahasraśhaḥ
behold my Arjun, the son of Pritha forms by the hundreds and thousands
nānā-vidhāni divyāni nānā varṇa ākṛitīni cha
various divine various colors shapes and

paśhya ādityān vasūn rudrān aśhvinau marutaḥ tathā
behold the (twelve) sons of Aditi the (eight) Vasus the (eleven) Rudras the (twin) Ashvini Kumars the (forty-nine) Maruts and
bahūni adṛiṣhṭa pūrvāṇi paśhya āśhcharyāṇi bhārata
many never revealed before behold marvels Arjun, scion of the Bharatas

iha eka-stham jagat kṛitsnam paśhya adya sa chara acharam

evam uktvā tataḥ rājan mahā-yoga-īśhvaraḥ hariḥ

aneka vaktra nayanam aneka adbhuta darśhanam

aneka divya ābharaṇam divya aneka udyata āyudham
many divine ornaments divine many uplifted weapons

divya mālya āmbara dharam divya gandha anulepanam
divine garlands garments wearing divine fragrances anointed with
sarva āśhcharya-mayam devam anantam viśhwataḥ mukham
all wonderful Lord unlimited all sides face

Verse 12
divi sūrya sahasrasya bhavet yugapat utthitā
in the sky suns thousand were simultaneously rising
yadi bhāḥ sadṛiśhī sā syāt bhāsaḥ tasya mahā-ātmanaḥ
if splendor like that would be splendor of them the great personality

Verse 13
tatra eka-stham jagat kṛitsnam pravibhaktam anekadhā
there established in one place the universe entire divided many
apaśhyat deva-devasya śharīre pāṇḍavaḥ tadā
could see of the God of gods in the body Arjun at that time

tataḥ saḥ vismaya-āviṣhṭaḥ hṛiṣhṭa-romā dhanañjayaḥ

paśhyāmi devān tava deva dehe
I behold all the gods your Lord within the body
sarvān tathā bhūta viśheṣha-saṅghān
all as well as hosts of different beings
brahmāṇam īśham kamala-āsana-stham
Lord Brahma Shiv seated on the lotus flower
ṛiṣhīn cha sarvān uragān cha divyān
sages and all serpents and divine

aneka bāhu udara vaktra netram
infinite arms stomachs faces eyes
paśhyāmi tvām sarvataḥ ananta-rūpam
I see you in every direction inifinite forms
na antam na madhyam na punaḥ tava ādim
without end not middle no again your beginning
paśhyāmi viśhwa-īśhwara viśhwa-rūpa

kirīṭinam gadinam chakriṇam cha
adorned with a crown with club with discs and
tejaḥ-rāśhim sarvataḥ dīpti-mantam

paśhyāmi tvām durnirīkṣhyam samantāt

dīpta-anala arka dyutim aprameyam
blazing fire like the sun effulgence immeasurable

tvam akṣharam paramam veditavyam
you the imperishable the supreme being worthy of being known
tvam asya viśhwasya param nidhānam

amī hi tvām sura-saṅghāḥ viśhanti
these indeed you assembly of celestial gods are entering
kechit bhītāḥ prāñjalayaḥ gṛiṇanti
some in fear with folded hands praise
svasti iti uktvā mahā-ṛiṣhi siddha-saṅghāḥ
auspicious thus reciting great sages perfect beings
stuvanti tvām stutibhiḥ puṣhkalābhiḥ
are extolling you with prayers hymns

rudra ādityāḥ vasavaḥ ye cha sādhyāḥ
a form of Lord Shiv the Adityas the Vasus these and the Sadhyas
viśhve aśhvinau marutaḥ cha uṣhma-pāḥ cha
the Vishvadevas the Ashvini kumars the Maruts and the ancestors and
gandharva yakṣha asura siddha saṅghāḥ
Gandharvas the Yakshas the demons the perfected beings the assemblies
vīkṣhante tvām vismitāḥ cha eva sarve
are beholding you in wonder and verily all

Verse 23
rūpam mahat te bahu vaktra netram
form magnificent your many mouths eyes
mahā-bāho bahu bāhu ūru pādam
mighty-armed Lord many arms thighs legs
bahu-udaram bahu-danṣhṭrā karālam
many stomachs many teeth terrifying
dṛiṣhṭvā lokāḥ pravyathitāḥ tathā aham
seeing all the worlds terror-stricken so also I

nabhaḥ-spṛiśham dīptam aneka varṇam
touching the sky effulgent many colors
vyātta ānanam dīpta viśhāla netram
open mouths blazing enormous eyes
dṛiṣhṭvā hi tvām pravyathitāntar-ātmā
seeing indeed you my heart is trembling with fear
dhṛitim na vindāmi śhamam cha viṣhṇo
firmness not I find mental peace and Lord Vishnu

danṣhṭrā karālāni cha te mukhāni
teeth terrible and your mouths
dṛiṣhṭvā eva kāla-anala sannibhāni
having seen indeed the fire of annihilation resembling
diśhaḥ na jāne na labhe cha śharma
the directions not know not I obtain and peace
prasīda deva-īśha jagat-nivāsa
have mercy The Lord of lords The shelter of the universe

amī cha tvām dhṛitarāśhtrasya putrāḥ

sarve saha eva avani-pāla sanghaiḥ

sandṛiśhyante chūrṇitaiḥ uttama-aṅgaiḥ
are seen getting smashed heads

vaktrāṇi te tvaramāṇāḥ viśanti daṁṣṭrā karālāni bhayānakāni kecit vilagnāḥ daśanāntareṣu sandṛśyante cūrṇitaiḥ uttama-aṅgaiḥ

yathā nadīnām bahavaḥ ambu-vegāḥ
as of the rivers many water waves
samudram eva abhimukhāḥ dravanti

tathā tava amī nara-loka-vīrāḥ

viśhanti vaktrāṇi abhivijvalanti
enter mouths blazing

yathā pradīptam jvalanam pataṅgāḥ
as blazing fire moths
viśhanti nāśhāya samṛiddha vegāḥ
enter to be perished with great speed
tathā eva nāśhāya viśhanti lokāḥ
similarly to be perished enter these people
tava api vaktrāṇi samṛiddha-vegāḥ

lelihyase grasamānaḥ samantāt
you are licking devouring on all sides
lokān samagrān vadanaiḥ jvaladbhiḥ
worlds all with mouths blazing
tejobhiḥ āpūrya jagat samagram
by effulgence filled with the universe all
bhāsaḥ tava ugrāḥ pratapanti viṣhṇo
rays your fierce scorching Lord Vishnu

ākhyāhi me kaḥ bhavān ugra-rūpaḥ
tell me who you fierce form
namaḥ astu te deva-vara prasīda
I bow to you God of gods be merciful
vijñātum ichchhāmi bhavantam ādyam
to know I wish you the primeval
na hi prajānāmi tava pravṛittim
not because comprehend your workings

Verse 32
śhrī-bhagavān uvācha
the Supreme Lord said
kālaḥ asmi loka-kṣhaya-kṛit pravṛiddhaḥ
time I am the source of destruction of the worlds mighty
lokān samāhartum iha pravṛittaḥ
the worlds annihilation this world participation
ṛite api tvām na bhaviṣhyanti sarve
without even you shall cease to exist all
ye avasthitāḥ prati-anīkeṣhu yodhāḥ
who arrayed in the opposing army the warriors

Verse 33
tasmāt tvam uttiṣhṭha yaśhaḥ labhasva
therefore you arise honor attain
jitvā śhatrūn bhuṅkṣhva rājyam samṛiddham
conquer foes enjoy kingdom prosperous
mayā eva ete nihatāḥ pūrvam
by me indeed these slain already
eva nimitta-mātram bhava savya-sāchin
only an instrument become Arjun, the one who can shoot arrows with both hands

droṇam cha bhīṣhmam cha jayadratham cha
Dronacharya and Bheeshma and Jayadratha and
karṇam tathā anyān api yodha-vīrān
Karn also others also brave warriors
mayā hatān tvam jahi mā vyathiṣhṭhāḥ
by me already killed you slay not be disturbed
yudhyasva jetā asi raṇe sapatnān
fight you shall be victorious in battle enemies

sañjayaḥ uvācha
Sanjay said
etat śhrutvā vachanam keśhavasya
thus hearing words of Shree Krishna
kṛita-añjaliḥ vepamānaḥ kirītī
with joined palms trembling the crowned one, Arjun
namaskṛitvā bhūyaḥ eva āha kṛiṣhṇam
with palms joined again indeed spoke to Shree Krishna
sa-gadgadam bhīta-bhītaḥ praṇamya
in a faltering voice overwhelmed with fear bowed down

arjunaḥ uvācha
Arjun said
sthāne hṛiṣhīka-īśha tava prakīrtyā
it is but apt Shree Krishna, the master of the senses your in praise
jagat prahṛiṣhyati anurajyate cha
the universe rejoices be enamored and
rakṣhānsi bhītāni diśhaḥ dravanti
the demons fearfully in all directions flee
sarve namasyanti cha siddha-saṅghāḥ
all bow down and hosts of perfected saints

kasmāt cha te na nameran mahā-ātman
why and you should they not bow down The Great one
garīyase brahmaṇaḥ api ādi-kartre
who are greater than Brahma even to the original creator

tvam ādi-devaḥ puruṣhaḥ purāṇaḥ

tvam asya viśhwasya param nidhānam

vettā asi vedyam cha param cha dhāma

tvayā tatam viśhwam ananta-rūpa

vāyuḥ yamaḥ agniḥ varuṇaḥ śhaśha-aṅkaḥ
the god of wind the god of death the god of fire the god of water the moon-God
prajāpatiḥ tvam prapitāmahaḥ cha
Brahma you the great-grandfather and
namaḥ namaḥ te astu sahasra-kṛitvaḥ
my salutations my salutations unto you let there be a thousand times
punaḥ cha bhūyaḥ api namaḥ namaḥ te
and again again also (offering) my salutations offering my salutations unto you

namaḥ purastāt atha pṛiṣhṭhataḥ te
offering salutations from the front and the rear to you
namaḥ astu te sarvataḥ eva sarva
I offer my salutations to you from all sides indeed all
ananta-vīrya amita-vikramaḥ tvam
infinite power infinite valor and might you
sarvam samāpnoṣhi tataḥ asi sarvaḥ
everything pervade thus (you) are everything

sakhā iti matvā prasabham yat uktam
friend as thinking presumptuously whatever addressed
he kṛiṣhṇa he yādava he sakhe iti
O Shree Krishna O Shree Krishna, who was born in the Yadu clan O my dear mate thus
ajānatā mahimānam tava idam
in ignorance majesty your this
mayā pramādāt praṇayena vā api
by me out of negligence out of affection or else

yat cha avahāsa-artham asat-kṛitaḥ asi
whatever also humorously disrespectfully you were
vihāra śhayyā āsana bhojaneṣhu
while at play while resting while sitting while eating
ekaḥ athavā api achyuta tat-samakṣham
(when) alone or even Krishna, the infallible one before others
tat kṣhāmaye tvām aham aprameyam
all that beg for forgiveness from you I immeasurable

pitā asi lokasya chara acharasya
the father you are of the entire universe moving nonmoving
tvam asya pūjyaḥ cha guruḥ garīyān

na tvat-samaḥ asti abhyadhikaḥ kutaḥ anyaḥ
not equal to you is greater who is? other
loka-traye api apratima-prabhāva
in the three worlds even possessor of incomparable power

tasmāt praṇamya praṇidhāya kāyam
therefore bowing down prostrating the body
prasādaye tvām aham īśham īḍyam
to implore grace your I the Supreme Lord adorable
pitā iva putrasya sakhā iva sakhyuḥ
father as with a son friend as with a friend
priyaḥ priyāyāḥ arhasi deva soḍhum
a lover with the beloved you should Lord forgive

adṛiṣhṭa-pūrvam hṛiṣhitaḥ asmi dṛiṣhṭvā
that which has not been seen before great joy I am having seen
bhayena cha pravyathitam manaḥ me

prasīda deva-īśha jagat-nivāsa

sahasra-bāho bhava viśhwa-mūrte

mayā prasannena tava arjuna idam
by me being pleased with you Arjun this
rūpam param darśhitam ātma-yogāt
form divine shown by my Yogmaya power
tejaḥ-mayam viśhwam anantam ādyam
resplendent cosmic unlimited primeval
yat me tvat anyena na dṛiṣhṭa-pūrvam
which my other than you no one has ever seen

Verse 48
na veda-yajña adhyayanaiḥ na dānaiḥ
not by performance of sacrifice by study of the Vedas nor by charity
na cha kriyābhiḥ na tapobhiḥ ugraiḥ
nor and by rituals not by austerities severe
evam-rūpaḥ śhakyaḥ aham nṛi-loke
in this form possible I in the world of the mortals
draṣhṭum tvat anyena kuru-pravīra
to be seen than you by another the best of the Kuru warriors

mā te vyathā mā cha vimūḍha-bhāvaḥ
you shout not be afraid not and bewildered state
dṛiṣhṭvā rūpam ghoram īdṛik mama idam
on seeing form terrible such of mine this
vyapeta-bhīḥ prīta-manāḥ punaḥ tvam
free from fear cheerful mind again you
tat eva me rūpam idam prapaśhya

iti arjunam vāsudevaḥ tathā uktvā

bhūtvā punaḥ saumya-vapuḥ mahā-ātmā

Arjun said
dṛiṣhṭvā idam mānuṣham rūpam tava saumyam janārdana
seeing this human form your gentle he who looks after the public, Krishna
idānīm asmi saṁvṛittaḥ sa-chetāḥ prakṛitim gataḥ
now I am composed in my mind to normality have become

Verse 52
śhrī-bhagavān uvācha
the Supreme Lord said
su-durdarśham idam rūpam dṛiṣhṭavān asi yat mama
exceedingly difficult to behold this form that you are seeing which of mine
devāḥ api asya rūpasya nityam darśhana-kāṅkṣhiṇaḥ
the celestial gods even this form eternally aspiring to see

na aham vedaiḥ na tapasā na dānena na cha ijyayā
never I by study of the Vedas never by serious penances never by charity never also by worship
śhakyaḥ evam-vidhaḥ draṣhṭum dṛiṣhṭavān asi mām yathā

bhaktyā tu ananyayā śhakyaḥ aham evam-vidhaḥ arjuna

mat-karma-kṛit mat-paramaḥ mat-bhaktaḥ saṅga-varjitaḥ
perform duties for my sake considering me the Supreme devoted to me free from attachment
nirvairaḥ sarva-bhūteṣhu yaḥ saḥ mām eti pāṇḍava
