Notation
Note: The tunes below are recorded in what
is called “abc notation.” They
can easily be converted to standard musical notation via highlighting with
your cursor starting at “X:1” through to the end of the abc’s, then
“cutting-and-pasting” the highlighted notation into one of the many abc
conversion programs available, or at concertina.net’s incredibly handy “ABC
Convert-A-Matic” at http://www.concertina.net/tunes_convert.html **Please note that the abc’s in the Fiddler’s
Companion work fine in most abc conversion programs. For example, I use
abc2win and abcNavigator 2 with no problems whatsoever with direct cut-and-pasting.
However, due to an anomaly of the html, pasting the abc’s into the
concertina.net converter results in double-spacing. For concertina.net’s
conversion program to work you must remove the spaces between all the lines
of abc notation after pasting, so that they are single-spaced, with no
intervening blank lines. This being done, the F/C abc’s will convert to
standard notation nicely. Or, get a copy of abcNavigator 2 – its well worth
it. [AK] |

***
As her house in George-street,
Rear-admiral Sir William Johnstone Hope, K.C.B. member for the
Ann belonged to that class of characters whose deaths are justly
regarded as a public calamity
as well as a private loss. In her own family she was every thing that is
amiable and excellent; the
most affectionate wife, and the most indulgent, yet the most judicious
mother. When she mingled
in the fashionable world, her demeanour was such as befitted the
daughter of a Scottish noble-
man, and the spouse of a British admiral; but home, the native soil of
all the domestic virtues,
was the scene of her truest enjoyments; and there are few who have
visited her hospitable
mansion without retaining a warm sense of the unbounded goodness of her
manners. To every
victim of misery and misfortune she was the unwearied and beneficent
friend. Indeed, to the
poor in general, as well as to her own family, her loss is irreparable.

Irish fling settings of the tune go
by the names “Frank Roche’s Favorite,” “John Roche’s Favorite,” and “Woodford
Fling,” reel settings as “Miss
Thornton’s” and other titles, and hornpipes as “Tiger Hornpipe” and “Signora Ferze’s
Hornpipe” (Goodman). Breathnach thought
the tune related to “Miss Thornton’s {Reel”} and “Spike Island Lasses [2]."

LADY ANNE MONTGOMERY. AKA and see “The Shaskeen [2].” Irish, Reel. D Major. Standard tuning.
AABB (most versions): AA’BB’ (Mallinson). The melody may have been Scottish in
origin. Irish sources appear to be from the northern part of the island, and it
is generally considered a northern fiddle tune. Despite the Scottish-sounding
title, there seems to be no Scottish cognates for it. Sources for notated
versions: Tommy Gunn (Derrylin, Co. Fermanagh and Belfast), who had it from
older Fermanagh fiddlers [Boys of the Lough]; Jim McElhone (County Derry)
[Mulvihill]; set dance music recorded at Na Píobairí Uilleann, mid-1980’s
