MISS KA – MISS RU

Notation Note: The tunes below are recorded in what is called “abc notation.” They can easily be converted to standard musical notation via highlighting with your cursor starting at “X:1” through to the end of the abc’s, then “cutting-and-pasting” the highlighted notation into one of the many abc conversion programs available, or at concertina.net’s incredibly handy “ABC Convert-A-Matic” at

http://www.concertina.net/tunes_convert.html

**Please note that the abc’s in the Fiddler’s Companion work fine in most abc conversion programs. For example, I use abc2win and abcNavigator 2 with no problems whatsoever with direct cut-and-pasting. However, due to an anomaly of the html, pasting the abc’s into the concertina.net converter results in double-spacing. For concertina.net’s conversion program to work you must remove the spaces between all the lines of abc notation after pasting, so that they are single-spaced, with no intervening blank lines. This being done, the F/C abc’s will convert to standard notation nicely. Or, get a copy of abcNavigator 2 – its well worth it.   [AK]

MISS KATHERINE STEWART FORBES (STRATHSPEY--OF ACHMEDDEN). Scottish, Strathspey. F Major. Standard tuning. AAB. Composed by William Marshall (1748-1833). Moyra Cowie (The Life and Times of William Marshall, 1999), thinks Miss Katherine was a relation of Sir William Forbes of Pitsligo Castle, a grandson of the 4th Laird who forfeited his entire holdings after Culloden, and who was sustained for a time on the kindness of his tenantry and friends, while he lived in caves disguised as a beggar. Sir William was a banker who was able to purchase the forfeited estate of Achmeddan. Marshall, Fiddlecase Edition, 1978; 1822 Collection, pg. 57. Stewart-Robertson (The Athole Collection), 1884; pg. 242.

AKA and see “Autumn Leaves,” "Ginley's Fancy," "Handsome Sally [1]," “The Man of the House,” “The Merry Thatcher,” “The New Potatoes,” "Old Tom,” “Paddy Carthy’s Reel [2],” "Sally Grant," “Through the Heather." Irish, Reel. E Dorian. Standard tuning. AB. Breathnach (1976) says the tune is known as “The Merry Thatcher” in north Dublin. An untitled tune in Stanford-Petrie (914) is the same in the first part although Breathnach thinks the second part is faulty and does not relate to the tune. Source for notated version: fiddler Mickey Doherty, 1965 (Stranorlar, Co. Donnegal, Ireland) [Breathnach]. Breathnach (CRÉ II), 1976; No. 235, pg. 122.

MISS KETTY HALL.  Scottish, Jig. D Major. Standard tuning. AA’BB’CC’AA’DD’AA’EE’AA’FF’AA’BB’. A two-part tune with four variation sets, in between which Gow directs the playing of the first part of the melody. Gow’s notation seems to indicated that a drone ‘A’ note be played at various times throughout the tune, esp. in the 2nd (‘B’) part. The variation sets printed by Gow are attributed to Sir Alexander Don and Mr. Nisbet of Dirleton. Aird (Selection of Scotch, English, Irish and Foreign Airs), c. 1780 (appears as “Katie Hall’s Reel”). Gow (Second Collection of Niel Gow’s Reels), 1788; pg. 27 (3rd ed.)

MISS KINLOCH'S MINUET. Scottish, Minuet. E Flat Major. Standard tuning. AABB. Composed by Johann Georg Christoph Schetky (1737‑1824). The German musician Schetky wrote this minuet soon after coming to Edinburgh in 1772 to take a position as the Musical Society's principal cellist. Although he seems not to have written dance music prior to this he wrote 12 minuets for upper‑class girls; Johnson (1984) thinks this tune the equal of the composer's finest chamber music. E Flat was a key gaining much favor on the Continent in the mid‑18th century for orchestral music as it was ideal for arranging the various orchestral instruments. Source for notated version: Stewart's Newest and Best Minuets, pg. 82. Johnson (Scottish Fiddle Music in the 18th Century), 1984; No. 64, pg. 158.
