We Shall Not Be Moved is a lovely spiritual from the Southern churches in the 1800’s. It was extremely hard to find the original lyrics because for years it had been rewritten as a union song. The text is based on biblical scripture:
Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is. For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.
— Jeremiah 17:7–8
And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
— Psalm 1:3
He only is my rock and my salvation: he is my defence; I shall not be moved.
— Psalm 62:6
[Refrain]
[G] We shall we shall [D] we shall not be moved
We shall we shall [G] we shall not be moved
Just like a [C] tree that’s planted by the [G] water,
We shall [D] not be [G] moved.
[G] Jesus keeps forever,
[D] We shall not be moved;
He forsakes, no, never,
[G] We shall not be moved;
Just like a [C] tree that’s planted by the [G] water,
We shall [D] not be [G] moved.
On His strength depending,
We shall not be moved;
And His way defending,
We shall not be moved;
Just like a tree that’s planted by the water,
We shall not be moved.
[Refrain]
His, the love enfolding,
We shall not be moved;
His, the grace upholding,
We shall not be moved;
Just like a tree that’s planted by the water,
We shall not be moved.
Friend so high and holy,
We shall not be moved;
Savior meek and lowly,
We shall not be moved;
Just like a tree that’s planted by the water,
We shall not be moved.
[Refrain]
From the Bible story
We shall not be moved;
Living for His glory,
We shall not be moved;
Just like a tree that’s planted by the water,
We shall not be moved.
