I wrote this with Mike Settle in 1961. We shared an apartment in Greenwich Village at the time. This was the first song I ever wrote. The original melody and chords were a bit different but the lyrics are the same.
Merry Christmas!
EARLY CHRISTMAS MORN
[Em] For seven nights I [D] traveled far
[C] Till I reached that [B7]place
[Em] In the quiet [D] of the night I saw
[C] The little [B7] Baby’s [Em]face
Chorus
[G] Hallelujah [D] Christ was born
[C] Early Christmas [B7] morn
[G] Hallelujah [D] Christ was born
[C] Early [B] Christmas [Em] morn
My journey there was long and hard
I faced the night so cold
But His manger was warm and bright
A beauty to behold
Hallelujah Christ was born
Early Christmas morn
[G] Hallelujah [D] Christ was born
[C] Early [B] Christmas [Em] morn
They gave Him gifts of myrrh and gold
And I could offer none
But He raised His head and smiled at me
With the beauty of the sun
Hallelujah Christ was born
Early Christmas morn
[G] Hallelujah [D] Christ was born
[C] Early [B] Christmas [Em] morn
And then He told me in His smile
He raised His hands so small
That mine had been the gift of love
The fairest of them all
Hallelujah Christ was born
Early Christmas morn
[G] Hallelujah [D] Christ was born
[C] Early [B] Christmas [Em] morn
